Small Boats Museum

Project: Small Boats Museum Cornwall, Heritage Lottery and ERDF funded

TGAC joined the Land Design project team at the earliest planning stages creating the interpretive plan and Millennium Fund Lottery bid, to house the National Small Boats Collection and displays from the Museum of Cornwall.

For the opening hang, a guiding narrative was needed for a widely diverse collection of small boats which we expressed as, “Small boats are shaped by the lives of the people that make and use them”.

This approach allowed the new museum to embrace diversity, explore differences and share unique stories.

TGAC undertook the research with curators, archivists, naval architects, meteorologists and ecologists.

We interviewed everyone from round-the-world yachtsmen to pilchard fishermen to develop scripts, interactives and AV displays.

The result was the creation of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall dedicated to collecting, researching and engaging people with our maritime heritage.
