The Livery Showcase Event is a careers day with a bit of a difference. On 20th of March 2017, the Livery Companies of London gathered at the Guildhall to give school students a taste of some thoroughly hands-on careers; from butchers to shipwrights, and framers to stonemasons.
We were delighted to be invited to take part as part of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists’ (one of the more recent guilds!).
Using on-the-spot recording, we asked students to speak about their favourite places in London and used our digital platform to create – in real time – an interactive map that students could contribute to and watch as their story was added to the live MyLondon.site map.
Through the course of the day, we saw the map getting populated with favourite places ranging from people’s bedrooms to ice cream shops in Covent Garden. The website helped us demonstrate how easy it is to contribute your voice to the city narrative and how instantaneously your thoughts can be broadcasted to the world – an experience that was clearly enjoyed by the contributing students as well.
It was a great opportunity for us to meet with ‘generation mobile’ and talk about the role of digital technology in their lives, and the process of developing and sharing narratives and experiences.
